When it comes to fauna and flora, Australia has given the world a lot to appreciate. After all, Koalas and Kangaroos hail from “Down Under.” On the flora front, Eucalyptus trees, native to Australia and now grown the world over, are highly valued for their medicinal properties. The tree’s oval-shaped leaves are a source of Eucalyptus oil, which is known for its healing powers.
Respiratory conditions, such as asthma, may be helped by inhaling steam with the addition of Eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil also is widely used as a cold remedy and is commonly used in cold and cough medicines. Research has shown that it can decrease mucus and expand the bronchi and bronchioles of your lungs. It’s also a natural anti-inflammatory agent. The ingredient in Eucalyptus oil responsible for these properties is cineole, which is a natural monoterpene.
Relief from Muscle Pain
Since Eucalyptus oil has a cooling effect when applied to the skin, it is a powerful analgesic – a remedy that reduces pain - when used topically. Its anti-inflammatory properties help inflammation in joints, muscles, and other inflamed tissues.
As an example of its help to reduce muscle pain, a study was conducted to investigate the pain-relieving benefits of a new product of counterirritant, Eucalyptamint. The study involved 10 participants with an average age of 34 +/- 6 years. Eucalyptamint was applied to the anterior forearm skin of one side and a placebo was applied to the contralateral forearm.
Subjective feelings, cutaneous blood flow, and skin temperature were measured before and periodically after the application of the Eucalyptamint. Muscle temperature was measured before and 30 minutes after the application of the compound. There was no significant effect on the subjective sensation. However, there were statistically significant increases in cutaneous blood flow and skin temperatures after the application of Eucalyptamint. Muscle temperature also increased significantly 30 minutes after application.
According to researchers, the study results suggest that Eucalyptament “produced significant physiologic responses that may be beneficial for pain relief/and or useful to athletes as a passive form of warm-up.”
Eucalyptus is also believed to lower stress levels. In one study, 62 healthy people experienced significant reductions in pre-surgery anxiety after inhaling Eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptol in Eucalyptus has been found to have anti-anxiety properties.
